Matthew Southerland is a principal linguist-analyst with SOSi’s Center for Intelligence Research and Analysis. Prior to joining SOSi in 2020, he served for more than six years as a policy analyst with the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. While on the Commission staff, his research and analysis focused on cross-Strait political-military issues, the capabilities and activities of the People’s Liberation Army, China’s territorial disputes in the East and South China Seas, and cybersecurity issues in U.S.-China relations. Southerland previously worked as a research associate at Defense Group Inc. and as a research assistant at the RAND Corporation. He has a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Maryland.
